Description
Ardea alba
Diet: fish, frogs, small mammals, insects, and sometimes small insects
Distribution: large range across many habitats from NA and SA to some parts of Europe and Asia and Africa
These species are known for wading through the water with their long legs. They often will stand still and wait for their prey to come to them. With a quick grab of the beak they have a nice meal to eat. Often easy to spot them in flight with their long necks tucked in and their long black legs trailing behind. Males and females look alike for this species. In the breeding season they will have ornamental plumes on their backs. They will spread these plumes out all over to impress a mate. Juveniles look like adults without their plumes.
