Description
Piranga rubra
Diet: mostly insects, occasionally eats fruits and berries
Distribution-Breeding: S NA Winter: Mexico, Central America and Northern parts of South America
This tanager is in the same family as cardinals (Cardinalidae). These birds like to forage in the trees for insects. These birds are expert hunters with catching bees and wasps and their young. The males are a brilliant bright red with a large beak. Females and juveniles are a dull yellow. Immature males will have a mixture of red and dull yellow.
Nesting: female builds a cup nest. Incubates it alone. Both parents feed young.
Song: slurr-like whistle (American robin-like)
Call: pit-ti-tuck
I have seen both the male and the female in the wild.
