Description

Baeolophus atricristatus
Distribution: NE part of Mexico and TX
Diet: berries, nuts, insects, seeds
A small passerine that can be spotted at bird feeders. Not as common as the Tufted Titmouse, but they are similar is its appearance, behavior and its calls/song. They differ in having most of their crest being black instead of the usual dabble of black at base of the crest for the Tufted Titmouse. They can make a nest in all sorts of areas from a normal bird box or a cavity or even using fence posts! Birds can be quite clever on where they can make their nests.
Song: "peew-peew-peew-peew" or can sound like "peter-peter-peter-peter" Depends on what you hear.
Call: "tsee-day-day-day"
NOTE: I often will spot these little Titmouse?s at my feeder. They sometimes come in pairs or one may follow a pair of Carolina Chickadees. They are always bringing a smile to my face when I see them or any other birds at the feeder. ?
IRL: Would have some cream present on its sides and more of the crest would be black.
