Description

Masters of extreme climates, this did not save the Hikel from the fall of their empire, but it did allow many of them to escape the fall, surviving in harsh deserts or cold tundra. The Hikel today exist primarily within the borders and periphery of their former empire, whose territories, along with the Hikel inhabiting them, have since been absorbed by other powers. Many Hikel face discrimination from these societies, which combined with their adapability force them to work odd jobs that no one else would take, with high risk and low reward. Be it manning interstellar trade routes prone to piracy and hyperdrive malfunction, or extracting rare resources in dangerous climate for a fraction of the profits, Hikel are likely to be working it. Faced with this fate, many Hikel have turned to criminality, striking out on their own as pirates and the like, and in a cruel twist, feeding into the image of the Hikel as vile savages, and further cementing the xenophobia levied at their species. Still other Hikel have lost contact with wider galactic civilization at large, and have been forced to regress to more primitive societies existing in otherwise uninhabitated planets. Despite the myriad differences between individual members of their race, there is something nearly all of them share. A dream of the return to the ancient Hikel Empire, whose memory has long since persisted past its fall. The Empire is remembered as a better time for the species in general, which, given their current standards of living, is not far from the truth.
