Description

SCIENTIFIC NAME: Grus grus
DISTRIBUTION: Europe, Asia and parts of Africa
DIET: plant matter, seeds, fruit, leaves, berries, vegetables, olives, acorns, nuts, insects, crabs, spiders, amphibians, rodents and small birds.
INFO: A crane that is part of the Gruidae Family consists of cranes. Males and females look alike for this species. Males are larger than females. This species has gray plumage, white on the sides of the head/neck, black on top of the head/near the top of the neck/chin/upper part of the neck, gray legs/feet and red on the top of the head. The juvenile is duller with gray/brown on the plumage, black wings, and some black on the neck and black wings.
BREEDING: The pair forms a strong monogamous pair bond. Each spring the pair will do their courtship dance (this can occur any time of the year to just do the dance) with bobs, hops, bows and stopping. For the courtship, the male will start with a march-like walk the female will call with her mate in unison. The nest is near shallow water and the female will lay two eggs. The female will do most of the incubation, but the male can incubate as well. The chicks are somewhat helpless at hatching, within a day the chicks can move on their own two feet. Both parents will take care of the chicks. The juvenile(s) will attain maturity at 3-6 years old.
SOUNDS: high-pitched trumpet-like call made by both the male and the female.
STATUS: LEAST CONCERN
NOTES: I recently spotted this species on a trip to Israel. They were often seen feeding in the fields or just flying.
