Description
Long after the Willosaurs' ascendance to the stars, there remained one region of their homeworld, Tamaran, that remained not only uninhabited but entirely unexplored - the Nortelica Crest, a thick rainforest that contained many species considered anomalous compared to other Tamaranian flora and fauna. Upon the species' first--and last--expedition into this jungle, they unknowingly carried a hitchhiker, a parasitic fungus known to post-event xenoecologists as Willomyces Silvapollyon. Initially undetectable, the fungus was able to read and detect the Willosaurs' neural patterns, using xenocognitive mimicry to remain behaviorally indistinguishable for weeks as it would slowly colonize its host's internal tissue, giving way for ascocarps to emerge and spread the fungal spores further, with every movement turning into a potential act of infection. By replacing key systems within its host's mental and physical biology, the fungus would be able to retain mobility and predatory function. A fully infected Willosaur would display erratic stalking behavior, muddled and echolalic speech, and sudden behavioral tics to catalyze spore release.
It was needless to say that the Willosaurs were entirely unable to combat this fungal contagion, and would slowly watch their millennia-old empire crumble at its existence due to its profound mimetic nature. The majority of infected Willosaur colonies and stations were eradicated by the galactic community, but their homeworld of Tamaran was merely quarantined, and legends state that they're still there, the perfect parasite waiting in dark with its perfect host.
