The K-9 Corps is an elite division of the FRC military. Troopers are trained with Za'shi hounds, dog-like creatures genetically enhanced that serve as elite scouts. The trooper wears the Katana battle armor while the Za'shi hound is outfitted in the Wakazashi enhancement unit. Together they make up a K-9 team. Soldiers in K-9 are selected after intense psychological evaluation, as the bond between the soldier and his Za'shi (or "caleb") is more intense than any human marriage or relationship. If the master is killed, the Za'shi is killed at once. If the hound is killed, doctors restrain the master and slowly put his mind back together.
Historical Note:
The wakizashi is a traditional Japanese sword with a sh?t? blade between 30 and 60 centimetres (12 and 24 in), with an average of 50 cm (20 in). It is similar to but shorter than a katana, and usually shorter than the kodachi ("small sword"). The wakizashi was usually worn together with the katana by the samurai or swordsmen of feudal Japan. When worn together the pair of swords were called daish?, which translates literally as "large and small". The katana was often called the sword or the long sword and the wakizashi the companion sword.
