Description

There was once a powerful mage and scholar who became obsessed with finding a way to avoid death. For two hundred years he studied and searched, sailing to faraway lands unknown and exploring the most ancient and sacred places, terrified of his own mortality. In desperation, he began to delve into dark, long-forbidden magic, and learned a great many arts that had been lost to the ages, including a spell that could give life to dead matter. However, there was and is no spell powerful enough to repair the severed ties between the body and the soul after death, and reanimated corpses therefore lack higher functions and any will of their own. The mage was disappointed with these results, but reasoned that the spell could still be of some use. He became a powerful and feared necromancer, raising an army of the dead to serve his will. Still searching for a path to immortality, the necromancer began to experiment on the undead after raising them. Of course, dark magic cannot be used without making some sort of sacrifice, and these spells were no exception. The land around the necromancer's tower became barren as his spells drained the life force of every living thing in the area, and even the color of the land was sapped, leaving a gray landscape with a perpetually darkened sky. To his horror, the necromancer realized that his life force was being drained as well, and that his body had been reduced to barely more than a withered husk. Becoming more and more desperate, he began experimenting on the living. He took creatures of all kinds from all over the world, subjecting them to horrific experiments, looking for anything that would work. One day, one of his experiments went horribly wrong. A botched invocation resulted in the necromancer's left arm being fused with over twenty different creatures. The resulting power struggle between a multitude of different minds caused the necromancer's mind to shatter, and he became an insane, predatory monster. Leaving the tower it had called its home, the newly-formed Lich Reaper made its way to the Underdark, where it lurks in the deepest caverns to this day, so many eons later. It kills anything it can find, draining their life force with its scythe-staff to sustain its own essence. Those who live in the area around the Underdark live in fear of it, believing that it is actually the personification of Death, and that it comes from the underworld to hunt the living and take them to its realm.

For Blazingstar's Underdark challenge. Also, please look at it in the editor; the PNG is screwed up again. I don't know why this keeps happening to me specifically and nobody else I know of, but whatever I guess.
