SCIENTIFIC NAME: Malurus splendens
DISTRIBUTION: Australia-Southwestern portion, central and parts of Eastern/NE areas.
DIET: insects, seeds, flowers and fruit
INFO: This Fairywren is part of the Maluridae Family that consists of small passerine birds like Fairywrens, emu-wrens and grasswrens. These birds are known for being small ball of fluff and with a tail cocked at an angle. Can be seen in groups at times. This species sexually dimorphic in the males and the females. The males are a brilliant blue with other shades of blue as well. He has a black line that connects on his chest, face and back of the head. The female is duller with brown, a pale belly, orange around the eye/face and a pale blue tail. The juvenile looks like the female in appearance.
BREEDING: This bird and other Fairywrens on not monogamous. They tend to appear socially monogamous, but in reality, both males and females are promiscuous in nature. Still the male and the female will be together/paired for life. The nest is made by the female, 2-4 eggs are laid and the female incubates them. The parents and helpers will feed the growing chicks. (These chicks could be from other males). After this brood fledges another brood may be done (depends on the weather and food availability) In terms of the territory, it could have the pair (reproductive) and helper birds (both males and females). These helper birds are from previous broods. So they are helping their genetic relatives in terms of feeding the chicks and defending territory. These helpers will be on the territory for a year till they found a territory/available mate. Often these birds will do allopreening to help get rid of insects and establish bonds that help determine the pecking order.
STATUS: Least Concern
NOTE: The male IRL would have lighter blue on the top of the head.cheeks/chest/upper belly and white near the lower belly. The female to have buffy color on the belly and orange around the eye/face. Both the male and the female is supposed to have a gray/black beak and legs/feet.
