Description
SCIENTIFIC NAME: Anolis carolinensis
DISTRIBUTION: subtropical parts of North America
DIET: small insects, spiders, molluscs, grains and seeds.
INFO: The Green Anole is a small reptile is part of the Dactyloidae Family that consists of anoles. The Green Anole is slender in appearance with a long head, and long tail, the toes have adhesive pads (allow it to climb) and dewlap (size depends on the sex of the anole)
The species exhibits sexual dimorphism with the male being larger than the female and the male has a larger dewlap that is more colorful (reddish). While the female?s dewlap is lighter and is much smaller. The anole?s color can change from green to brown phase (possibly due to behavior change). They are often seen with green and have a pale creamy belly/throat/underside of the mouth. Very young anoles have a wider head and shorter tail.
BREEDING: The male will have a territory and will patrol it to defend it from other males. The male will do a display with his dewlap while bobbing. The female will lay 1-2 eggs at a time in a clutch and bury them. She may lay eggs every two weeks (up ten eggs can be laid in a breeding season). The eggs will be incubated by the sun and the young anoles will hatch on their own. The young hatchling must take care of itself.
SOUNDS: mostly silent, can make various noises like barks, chirps, and duck-like quack
STATUS: LEAST CONCERN
NOTES: For some time I have been wanting to make the Green Anole (one of my favorite reptiles, well besides pterosaurs). I have also seen these in my backyard/frontyard in various places. Even at one time saw one male use his dewlap to scare another male off his territory.
