SCIENTIFIC NAME: Turdus merula
DISTRIBUTION: Highly extensive range: temperate parts of Eurasia, North Africa, Canary Islands and South Asia. Introduced to Australia and New Zealand. Some of the population will migrate.
DIET: insects, earthworms, seeds and berries
INFO: This iconic Blackbird is part of the Turdidae Family that consists of thrushes. This species exhibits sexual dimorphism. The male is a glossy black, with yellow around the eye/beak and grayish legs/feet. The female is duller with brownish plumage, slightly lighter brown on the belly, a yellow beak/around the eye and grayish legs/feet. The juvenile is dark brown with lighter speckles of yellowish brown the older juvenile will look more like the female but with white spots on the underside. The juvenile has a duller beak and eye ring. The first-year male looks like the adult male but has darker eye ring/beak and brownish wings.
BREEDING: The male will court the female with various courtship displays. The pair will be monogamous and will stay as long as they survive. The pair can separate due to poor breeding attempts. The pair will find a good nest site and cup nest is made by the female. The female will lay 3-5 eggs and she will incubate for 12-14 days. The chicks are altricial with no down. Both parents will feed the chicks and the chicks will fledge at 10-19 days. The pair will continue to feed until 3 weeks of age. Another brood can be started by the female and the male will continue to feed the fledglings for a while. The same nest will be used. Three brood can be done if all is successful, plenty of food and it is in a certain range.
SOUNDS: SONG-varied with low flute-like sounds, warbles and higher pitches in the song for the male. CALL-?pook-pook-pook? given for alarms. The alarm can be changed for specific predators. Even the male Blackbird can give a ?chink? or ?chook-chook? to deter other males from being in his territory over the night. The blackbird can sing quieter in the winter months. More calls can be given.
