Description

Back when it was just a city, Xocal?Inac was ruled by a handful of lords, said to be descendants of the original band of Xoc. These lords watched over their lands, having their own private companies of knights in their service. When the Queendom of Xocal?Inac was officially founded, the lords became Lords, the rulers of the Queendom.

Each Lord precedes over a Court, the number of which varies as Courts are dismantled or new ones built, usually numbering around a dozen or so. When Xocal?Inac Queendom first took to space colonisation, it became the duty of the Lords to oversee the expansion of their Courts to new stars. As the Lords themselves would typically preside in Capital Xocal?Inac, they would anoint titles such as Dukes and Duchesses to manage their colonies.

Xocals are known for their knights. Each knight is a part of a Knight Order, of which there are several, each belonging to the service of a Court. While each Court also has a standing army of warriors, it is the Knight Orders the Court possesses that determine its strength. Each Court is more or less balanced in power, as outliers are seen as disruptive to the Queendom?s balance. If a Court expands too much, they might be made to share their spoils, and if a Court fails to catch up to other Courts, they might be dissolved, their lands and knights shared between the others by the Queen?s decree.

The Queen?s position thus boils down to keeping the Courts in balance, offering advice on which campaigns to undertake and settling disputes between Courts. While the Queen?s words are backed by the Knight Orders of their own Court, the main power behind the Queen?s words comes from genetics. Each whelp undergoes a ritual of Herbs to transform their genetic code to become a ?true xocal?, and in the process, they?re imprinted with an unyielding desire to serve the crown. Not the Queen personally, but the position of the Queen. Should a Queen abuse their power, xocals are free to act against them, only with the genetic disinclination towards disrupting the royal institution itself. Should a Queen die, a new one is chosen amidst the Lords, either via a tournament or a common agreement.

Some notable Courts:

Court of the Crimson Crest
Said to have descended from a Xoc Princess, this Court has held the position of Queen for the majority of the time the Queendom has existed. They hold no colonies, instead fully focusing their Knight Orders to protecting the Capital Xocal?Inac. In terms of values, they tend to be more traditional, placing great emphasis on spiritualism. Their Order of Rouge Guard might be the most iconic Knight Order of the Queendom, their pink and golden platebodies known all across the galaxy. Despite being well known, they are not typically seen outside the inner planets of the Queendom outside times of crusade.

Fourfold Court
Said to have descended from a monk of the Fourfold, an ancient religion of the original inhabitants of Keeski, which is now known as Capital Xocal?Inac. Despite their namesake, the Fourfold Court serve no gods. They tend to stray away from traditional ways, a consequence of being the Court in charge of the frontier colonies, far from the inner core where tradition blooms the strongest. Still, some old ways are hard to break from, and thus their Knight Orders are divided into four, each carrying over principles associated with one of the Fourfold Titans: Order of Spark Keepers, Order of Blaze Bringers, Order of Stone Arms and Order of Quiet Torrent.

Court of Sublevacion
A briefly lived Court, and the last one ever to be established. It was founded by Knight Scaldren of the Order of Quiet Torrent in order to become a Lord, a position he used to commit a revolution against the throne. After he conquered the Capital Xocal?Inac and installed Zelena as Queen, all Courts were dismantled and the control of all Knight Orders given to the only Lord remaining, Lord Scaldren.

All these Courts, all their Lords and (probably) values, dismantled by Scaldren... What a terrible shame.
