Xenocom's attempts to head off the modifying community culminated in the disastrous release of the N-39. Because of some scattered complaints that the N-38 lacked in maneuverability compared to the N-37, Xenocom introduced the Foil-Wing. Capable of turns only slightly sharper than the N-38, the N-39 was extremely frail and weak. Xenocom also further reduced the size of the engine,making the ship only slightly faster than the N-38. Overall, the ships diminished size proved to be an extreme weakness. The navigation computer's smaller chassis mounted next to the debris filter made it prone to erratic behavior, sometimes sending the pilot in light speed straight into a star. The N-39 was often referred to as "Tinfoil" by disgruntled pilots. Many blame Xenocom's mistakes on its then current ties to and near merger of the manufacturer Chanuu Drive Yards, who are notorious for using cheap parts. This in combination with the N-39s mass production, its weak design and its low popularity forced Xenocom to reduce the price considerably. The ship is therefor used by smaller empires for use as light fighters in great numbers. Some pilots claim to have sufficiently modified the ship to become a reliable, agile fighter, but this requires much more money than the ship is worth and an intimate knowledge in starship modification.
