Description
Geocaching, is an outdoor game that utilizes the Global Positioning System (GPS) coordinates to hide and locate caches (waterproof containers) all over the world. The caches may be large enough to contain trinkets or they may be tiny and contain only a log to sign and date. The 1st geocache was placed on May 3, 2000, and, in the 10 years since, over 1,092,192 geocaches have been placed in over 100 countries and on all 7 continents, including Antarctica. The game can be played 24/7 solo or in groups and can be done while walking, hiking, cycling, horseback riding and driving. You can use a dedicated GPS receiver, your mobile phone (with GPS and geocaching software), a PDA or even the old fashioned map and compass. Some players compete to be the 1st to Find a new geocache by having the notifications of new caches sent to their mobile phones. The caches can be located in both urban and nature locations and hidden with varying degrees of difficulty for the finder. Urban caches are often quite challenging to locate due to the need to hide them from non-participating onlookers (muggles). Sometimes, you have to solve a puzzle or riddle to locate a cache. For many players the hunt for the cache is the reward but they will often exchange trinkets or move a travel bug (an object with a trackable# that is logged in and out of a cache each time it's location is changed.) Geocaching is a great deal of fun and can be shared by young and old alike. It is an excellent excuse to push yourself away from your computer and go outside to play.
