Description

The Pegasus SH-10 Hermes is a long overdue replacement for the previous generations of Shimeran shuttlecraft. Due to most previous generations being unable to reach orbit on their own power huge rail accelerator complexes had to be built on the more advanced worlds of the Empire to get resources where needed, this way the existing designs? flaws were overcome. This system worked on Meridian and the Shimeran Homeland whereas newly formed colonies had to rely on archaic multistage rockets in order to advance. The Crane series of shuttle which was the Empire?s linchpin at the time was only capable of fulfilling baseline tasks beyond the inner circles, ultimately causing the bankruptcy of its manufacturer; further weakening the colonies whose dependence on pre-warp technology was now solidified. This era of quasi development continued for several decades until a catastrophic design flaw was revealed in one of the launch vehicles resulting in loss of life and land locking many of the colonies. To put an end to this dire situation the Hermes was conceived with the Pegasus Corporation and Shimeran science core at the helm. The initial design was built on the chassis of a former orbital launch and re-entry vehicle since this particular generation of shuttle was designed to empathize low cost as well as overall effectiveness, the original flaw of its predecessor. The Hermes is a crossbreed of many technologies old and new, rather than a biological operator the Hermes is a drone; this was implemented to minimize casualties since keeping a stable orbit and calculating reentry is a tedious task, even for the best pilots it is also capable of being remote controlled. It uses a large antimatter pulse detonation engine, mounted on the back of the craft, the engine works via rapid ?pulse? cycling of antimatter blasts which are used to ignite compressed air to yield enormous amounts of thrust, heat and noise to ensure a safe and stable flight; it works in tandem with four slim-thrust fusion jet engines and is effective in high atmosphere. When the primary engines have done their part and the craft is in orbit it depends on a set of plasmatic drives for interplanetary travel. When its work in orbit is done it can safely make planetfall assisted by a state of the art VTOL/RCS maneuvering system and a nano-carbon lattice heat shield which redirects the heat and energy outwards as thrust anywhere on the vessel or to the onboard reactor. The Hermes also features two advanced high yield solar batteries which absorb 80% of incoming sunlight and transfer it directly into energy for later use. All these cleaver innovations and its overall effectiveness assured in a new era of progress for the Shimeran Empire. Like many other Imperial vehicles the Hermes is modular and its components can be switched out on a whim, as a result most Hermes? users modify and customize the craft to their liking. The most noticeable changes were made by the Shimeran airforce and some outfits of the Grand Armada; the variant is known as the Gungir and works in tandem with other more specialized craft as a high altitude stealth fighter/bomber. It was ideal for the role due to its small size and large cargo capacity, the only thing that let it down was the extremely loud antimatter pulse detonation engine mounted on its rear. It was replaced by a thrust vectoring scramjet for extra acceleration beyond supersonic speeds. The slim thrust engines were stripped off entirely along with the dihedral wings in favor of a forward swept design for greater atmospheric maneuverability. Finally an EMP cannon, plasma lance, an advanced targeting suite and numerous types of smart ordinance were added. It proved highly useful as a homeland defense unit and it has became the de facto ambassador of the Shimeran Empire when it comes to dealing with unknown entities near its boarders.
