Description
The Chimera III, like its predecessor, is designed as an assault nexus. The bulbous constructs on its arms are shield generators that project a classic "hard light" bubble shield over a wide radius to protect allies within it, and the newest version has significant upgrades. For one thing, the shield generator itself is borrowed starship tech, so it's almost three times stronger than before. It used to be vulnerable to orbital bombardment, but no longer. Its radius is now adjustable and can reach up to 35 meters, a 53% increase, though it loses strength with distance.
Finally, and most importantly, it can now be used while moving. If you're wondering why they don't just give the bubble shield to tanks, it's because it requires specialized ground contact tech to function, which is only practical on mechs. How it works is classified, but that doesn't matter. What does matter is that now an entire squadron can hunker down within the Chimera's bubble and penetrate a line of heavy fire in relative safety. No longer is the Chimera relegated to the inglorious role of "retreat support;" now it's a battering ram.
To make matters worse for enemies, the Chimera has one last new trick up its sleeve: it can sprint. No other Kamorran mech can do this. Enemies used to the characteristic brisk walk of other mechs have been known to literally scream and flee when they see the Chimera III, a 100-ton pile of guns, break out in full earthshaking sprint towards them, covering ground with the speed and agility of a hover tank. How it does this without compromising its structural integrity is classified, but most will agree that Corinthian materials tech is to blame. The bubble shield is not usable while sprinting because contact with the ground is lost, so the pilot must have good situational awareness. The Chimera III has sacrified armor for mobility, and it cannot withstand high caliber fire for long without its shield. Furthermore, though the shield is highly resistant to EMP from the outside due to its hard light nature, objects moving at speeds below 6 meters/second will pass through it - a necessity for allowing allies to enter, but leaving it vulnerable to sabotage.
The armament of the Chimera III varies based on a given role. Pictured is a medium range support variant equipped with two 155mm reverse coil railguns, four coaxial iris-bore machineguns, two 20mm high intensity laser batteries, and two omniload missile racks.
