Description
The Ilium, personal cadre of the Hierarch, are different. Just by observing them you can tell that something is off. Maybe it's the way they move, their lazy, effortless, yet deliberate stride. It seems like they are incorporeal, like they weigh nothing and are completely unconcerned about the world around them. Maybe it's the way they seem to take up space; no matter how big the room is, when an Ilium enters you feel cramped. You feel the urge to leave. Your instincts tell you that they are dangerous beyond comprehension.
In ancient times the Ilium were the personal bodyguard of kings, sworn to protect them at any cost. Soon after the Hierarch came to power, once the assassination attempts started, he revived the Ilium and made them fit for modern threats. They were the first super-beings produced by the Kamorrans, and though their lives are unnaturally long their power has yet to be surpassed by modern technologies. These lonely souls were born from the Traitan Sequence, a handcrafted genome named after a Kamorran mythological figure who traded his soul for godlike power. It spawns a creature that is omniscient in the ways of combat. Every aspect of their bodies is redesigned from the ground up to improve their fighting abilities; they make the Seraphim look like mall cops. In fact, their genetics are sufficiently different from normal Kamorrans that they qualify as a different species.
They certainly look Kamorran on the outside, but the inside is another matter. Though everything is more or less in the same place, it's all much denser. Muscle fibers are thicker, with more cross-coverage between the microscopic filaments for greater contractile force. Brain matter is arranged in a more crystalline manner, which means that it can perform more actions simultaneously. Fat tissue is redesigned completely, consisting of new molecules that provide eight times the energy. Extracellular fluid is imbued with dilatant properties to absorb damage. Nanomachines are present in all tissues, performing a wide variety of functions, especially in the blood, which is black with them.
With all of these modifications it is easy to think of them as machines, but that is a mistake. They are fully sentient beings with personalities, and sometimes they seem somewhat resentful towards the Hierarch for making them what they are. But it can't be helped, and it can't be denied that the service they provide to their species is invaluable. They are the last line of defense, and the Hierarch has been known to periodically send them out on assignments that no one else can do.
It's hard to describe their power. There is no precedent for it. You would have to see it for yourself to understand it, if you could see it at all. They move faster than the naked eye can track, and they strike with cataclysmic force. The exact specs of their armor are classified, and it is rumored that they are permanently sealed inside and can't survive otherwise. Recently they have foregone their traditional high-visibility yellow coloring in favor of the Concordant silver.
