Description
1/3
I stepped into the hall. The stone walls reached, by my quick estimate, twenty meters high into a rounded dome ceiling. They were decorated with ornaments of alabaster and rough but impressive carvings depicting a great swarm of nirpecs surrounding a small band of xocal knights standing unfazed against insurmountable odds. In the middle of the chamber was a sitting stone, currently occupied by the Captain-Knight I was here to meet.
?Come, now. ? The knight spoke. ?Let?s not waste time.?
I walked until I was a few meters from my host, clad in sturdy-looking full plate armor of worn sumberlait. His armor combined with the modest earthy decor of the hall made my Warrant Knight uniform stand out rather awkwardly.
There was no seat for me, which I suppose was a custom in this world. I wasn?t sure whether to keep standing or to squat down, but fortunately the Captain-Knight opened his mouth before my indecision became too noticeable.
?Alix, was it?? The Captain-Knight asked while reading a document in his hand, and then continued without waiting for my answer: ?From.. Golden Court? Right.. the gal from Nauternia. ?
?Yes.? I confirmed. I could already see where this was going by the tone he used to speak the name of my home city.
?So.. what brings a Warrant Knight from Nauternia here? Does the Order of the Decros not pay enough? I hope you?re under no false impressions here. We don?t deal in sbucks here in the Swarmguard. Whatever property or wealth you have acquired in Nauternia amounts to nothing here.? He spoke, taking his gaze off the document.
This was always the case whenever a knight, or anyone from Nauternia, ventured to other parts of the Queendom. Knights would still get some respect, even if many considered them mere ?profit-driven mercenaries?. Civilians from Nauternia had it a lot worse, rarely seen as anything else than criminals, cheaters and scoundrels. Unless you were one of the top-layerers, of course.
?I understand the Swarmguard is very different from the Decros. I have done my due diligence. Wouldn?t be here otherwise.?
?Then you know that we do not accept just anyone.? He said, with the implication of inviting me to prove myself. Prove that I am not just some opportunist.
?I know. The Order of the Swarmguard has been around since.. well, the beginning of the Queendom?s expansion to space, really. When The Brood began to notice us and took offence to our growing dominance in their tipbound neighboring sectors. They sought to continue their expansion, we were an obstacle. With the emerging conflicts, a sect of knights began to specialize in fighting back against nirpecs, and has now stood for.. well, over two thousand years. One of the longest-lasting Orders there is.
I am under no illusions. I realize a transition from a mere lawkeeper in the Queendom?s crime capital to one of the most prestigious Knight Orders, the true defenders of the Queendom, is preposterous and unearned. I do not expect to be accepted immediately, in fact, I might be disappointed if it were so. Instead, I hope to be able to train and prove myself in the Swarmguard?s training halls. Whether I have to become a squire again, or even a warrior, I do not care. I just.. I just need to know that I?m fighting for something that actually matters.?
