Description
Sentinels are a type of "freelance Space Captains" who always work in pairs and (ideally) hold no allegiances with any specific empire or faction, instead helping whoever they feel like?usually those who will pay them best for their troubles. They are viewed very differently depending on the area of the galaxy; in the coreworlds they're considered little more than glorified bounty hunters who don't care what they're paid to do as long as they are paid well, while in the edgeworlds they are regarded far more highly and many see them as allies of the average alien. By contrast, their more solo-oriented counterparts are seen as ?lapdogs? of either the Surisin Omni-Empire or the Galactic Council, depending on the sentiment of the person being asked.
However, in general, the Sentinels are seen as "second-rate heroes" at best, the stereotype stemming from that they are often either Captains who failed to get an official license or who lost theirs and have fallen from grace. While this isn't entirely inaccurate, a large majority of Sentinels chose that "career path" over that of a standard Space Captain because of the greater freedom they were allowed.
The reason why Sentinels always work in duos is debatable, and you're almost certainly going to get a different answer from every Sentinel you ask, but the most common reason is believed to be that due to the poorer training they often receive and their lack of funding compared to their licensed counterparts, it's safer for them to have another person who has their back, so to speak. But as noted, this is not always the case, and every duo has their own reasons.
The Sentinels were founded in Mikhos around 900 years ago by a most unlikely of partnerships: a begrudged ex-Captain who was stripped of her license unjustly and a renowned space pirate whose own crew turned against him after he refused to bend his moral code. The duo met by chance when they answered the same distress signal from a freighter that was under attack from a gang of slavers, and despite their differences they found their skills complemented each other surprisingly well. And the rest, as they say, is history.
The pair quickly rose to fame among the less lawful areas of the galaxy as "vigilantes with hearts of gold" (a description which they themselves objected to) and soon many others sought to follow in their footsteps, leading to the formation of the Sentinels?the name coming from the role of "guardians" they took upon the denizens of the edgeworlds.
The duo later disappeared without a trace after answering one final distress call on a world being ravaged by the Herald's Horde, and it is assumed they perished during the mission.
While the Sentinels aren't an official organization, the duo that founded them did set up a few rules that have been maintained as a "code of conduct" throughout the generations; Sentinels are expected to abide by these rules, and those who break them are shunned by their peers?or worse.
The Sentinel Guideline:
? A Sentinel must always work in a pair?never solo, never more.
? Sentinels are not allowed to take part in any wars between empires?only defend against aggressors and avert bloodshed where possible.
? A Sentinel must never accept coin for blood?the taking of lives is only permissible when it serves to protect others or prevent wrongdoing, and never as a means to enrich any party involved.
? If a Sentinel loses their partner in the line of duty, the death MUST be avenged?a vendetta of this manner is the only exception to all other rules. Other Sentinels are allowed?even expected?to assist in the avenging of a fallen comrade.
The last rule of the Sentinel Guideline was added by the founders only days before their fateful final mission. It is speculated they had a feeling it would be their last, and wanted to ensure that if they did fall, their deaths would be avenged.
Initiating a vendetta, however, demands confirmation of death.

Your armor designs look so clean, I love the chest detail!

...impactful), but also functionally interesting, as the rule would serve as a strong deterrent against lethal violence against Sentinels as an "organization", thus encouraging non-bloody resolutions, which seems to fit their code of conduct in general.

Ooh, love the design, that head is so cool. Also, the Sentinel concept is so interesting. Having them be in pairs is a fun contrast to usual Space Captains, and the rule about vendetta seems not just thematically satisfying (makes the bonds feel more...
