Most insects with bright colors like this use them to signal that they're poisonous, but this species is mostly seen in systems closer to the galactic core, run by a mechanical empire which need not eat. Perhaps this pattern brings back some sort of deep-rooted fear in such an empire. It seems to be fairly effective; the planets that this species has spread to seem far less affected by those mechanical individuals, despite being in systems that belong to them.
