Description

The expo went on for what seemed like hours. From her vantage point on one of the balconies, Jikael was treated to the entire spectacle. Strangely, the technology being shown tonight didn?t strike her as remotely important. Most of it was placebo tech, overrated hardware meant to bolster the few remaining corporations? images. Back in the days of Klythle and O-I, the ORWE had been a massive spectacle. Now with barely 100 people, it was a shell of its former self- perhaps the reason the Xadari had chosen to attack. Yet they seemed bored as well: Even with their expressionless features, the cleverly disguised undead had absolutely no interest in the technology being shown. A new InverTech fighter seemed to pique the interest of one Xadari ?disguised as an old woman- near the front of the stage, but ?she? soon adopted a bemused look when it was revealed that the mecha was built from worthless placebo tech. Losing interest in the display, Jikael searched out her comrades. Zagref was hitting on some of the more attractive attendees unsuccessfully, and Micheal and Kasia were both conversing pleasantly while keeping an eye on the quiet undead congregating near the stage. Evelyn, still perched on the rafters a level above Jikael, watched silently with a wolfish gaze. Before she could think of how much she admired her friends ?Micheal in particular, for personal reasons- a gasp emanated from the crowd. Jikael turned her attention to the stage, as the triumphant corporate exec. in charge of his show revealed a shape that filled Jikael and her fellows with dread. Standing behind the Goragacken was a mech that Jikael recognized from brief classified footage. Blazing white with a single, pink eye, it stood with a posture like a bird of prey: Appolyn, a mech that could outspeed any known craft. She noticed the Xadari begin to move towards the stage. Quietly, Jikael murmured into her headpiece for all to hear. ?Everyone, this is what they?re looking for. Zag, cause a diversion to get the civ?s out of here.? On cue, the ninja pulled the fire alarm, and with a moment of outraged confusion the attendees began to move out of the main hall. Of course the Xadari stayed behind, but even in their apparent lack of emotion Jikael found their nonchalance disturbing. Before anyone else could say anything, the blast doors slammed shut behind the last civilian and locked loudly. Micheal put on his helmet and extended his assault rifle, Kasia quietly materialized her armor and Infinite Repeater, and Zagref disappeared into the shadows. Evelyn and Jikael smoothly trained their long-range weapons on the closest Xadari to them, respectively, and a tense moment of silence followed. Then, the disguises were off. What had appeared to be old socialites seemed to briefly melt, before their false exteriors were ?sucked? into their bodies. Sharp, metal limbs popped free, some splitting into more sets of limbs, and various infernal appendages revealed themselves. Weapons seemed to appear from nowhere, grafted into their bodies with unnatural grace, and their faces unfolded to reveal horrible, indescribable feeding parts. And yet, the ?fleshbags? ?now fully aware of the situation- didn?t attack. From an unknown location Zagref muttered, ?Something isn?t right.? As if to answer him, a single undead stepped forward. It moved with grace unlike the fleshbags Jikael had fought before, and possessed slender features. Jikael recognized her as the woman from earlier. To her morbid surprise, the decidedly female abomination opened her many-jointed mouth, and spoke clearly. ?I?m glad you were all so predictable. It has made things very easy to manage tonight. As you might be aware, you have fallen into our trap. That hologram of the Ascendant Sovereign was forged by us. And now, you will all die? And become one with us.? The Xadari all extended their weapons, and in an instant the Thunderdome flashed with lightning.
