Another thought: Ancient Greece and Rome were often just as colorful but none of the Greek or Roman buildings I've seen on Spore reflect that at all. Spore would probably benefit from you giving that a try as well?
You should do some ancient Egyptian buildings and architecture :) evidence suggests much of it was painted and colorful like your Egyptian hieroglyphs, and less like the more plain Egyptian stuff common on Spore
