Description

These massive plasma cannon were originally designed to be mounted on the Oberon Class capital ships; known as the Mark Deuce Plasma Blast Cannon. Planetary defense applications were never considered for this weapon until after an Oberon Class vessel was hulled and crashed onto a small moon. The enemy made the mistake of thinking the vessel was out of the fight, but one of the three Mark Deuce cannon?s remained operational, as well as several other smaller weapons. From their fixed position, the crew was able to use the cannon?s renowned ability to curve the plasmoid projectile and struck two enemy vessels in their aft and engine sections, disabling them./////

The original name was considered too lengthy for the planetary defense market and a distinct name was desirable simply for a marketing differential; thus it was named after the vessel class that most commonly carried it./////

These gigantic turrets are located in unpopulated areas and remotely operated from a central command center due to the powerful magnetic fields and catastrophic damage potential should a critical failure occur. No personnel are allowed with one-half mile of the cannon during standby. During alerts and combat, the clear zone is extended to two miles. Maintenance crews are not allowed to approach the units without proper shutdown procedures having been initiated and command approval. This differs from vessel mounted units, where there are greater hazards, hull armor protects the cannon and near constant alert status exists./////

The 1.25 Gigajoule cannon is provided with power, coolant and reaction gas via underground conduits and piping. A Dense Plasma Focus is used to react the gas stream and form the plasmoid, which is a self-contained magnetic plasma ball. This compressed, super-heated, spinning ball of plasma is then accelerated and fired using an array similar to a rail gun. Note that the cannon does not possess any means to make horizontal adjustments and, in reality, very little elevation adjustment. The elevation lifters are primarily for lowering the cannon into a maintenance position. By manipulation of the plasmoids magnetic field during formation, affecting compression, flux, and spin, and by controlling the application of the firing fields in the rails; the plasmoid can be curved in almost any direction./////

In one extraordinary case, a gun crew arced the plasmoid into a ground force of mobile armor and artillery nearly 1100 kilometers away. There was significant terrain damage as the plasmoid neared the enemy force and literally hugged the planet?s curvature before slamming head on into the armored column, destroying over 50% of the force in a near nuclear level explosion./////
The cannon pictured above is in mid-fire during annual war games on the planet Creseous IV. This is a stunning shot of the plasmoid as it travels along the rails, leaving plasma and magnetic arc-jets in its wake.

Good work R long description!

Very good cannon. The vortex effect created by the round really makes it look like it is traveling very fast. BTW have you seen the video on youtube of the navy testing railguns?
