What I do is use that technique,then use a different part for the mouth. ex: you could use horns for teeth or terraflops for a beaklike mouth,etc.

Just a tip:(Though you probably know this already,and wanted that look) Next time you make a custom head,try and keep the mouth part right under the connecting joint to the body. That way the head animates,but without the odd jaw movements.
