lShipNeedsACaption entries for BMPalmann?s contest> Malanorvians are somewhat like our cephalopods and evolved on an oceanic planet with many coral reefs and islands. They are able to camouflage themselves by controlling their skin color, just like our cephalopods. But they also evolved with the ability to change their basic shape, which enables them to swim, fly and move about on land. They can?t change their mass, of course, but by realigning the multiple layers composing their tissues they can simulate wings or limbs. Their astrophysicists finally were able to design some of these capabilities into their spaceships, to a limited extent. The ships skins can be camouflaged to match its surroundings and the smaller spacecraft can morph into shapes more suitable to fighters or transport. In addition, the ships have the most sophisticated technology known for communications, navigation and sensors. Their engines are actually jump generators rather than thrusters, which requires precise navigation fixes. The ship?s computers can calculate the exact coordinates of a distant point with their navigation and sensor array, which is concealed in the stylized tentacles. The jump system is so accurate that the camouflaged fighters can jump inside an enemy ship?s shielding, drop mines, and jump back out to safety before the mines detonate.
