I dreamt again of Elarwyna, that foul, hulking monster that plagued our ancestors eons ago when we colonized this gods forsaken planet. Dreamt of the arena where countless generations of clans have watched the blood of their kin soak into the sand. Elarwyna demands every 18 years one person from each clan fight him in the arena or he rampages. Each gladiator is garbed in their clan colors, minimally to reduce further contamination of wounds (though few survive to be infected). Thrusting and cutting hand weapons are allowed, in Elarwyna's twisted idea of a sporting chance for the fighters, but are of little use against his thick, plated hide. Tomorrow morn is the beginning of the bloodletting festival. Centuries ago, 150 fighters would be turned out to their fate against Elarwyna in the arena. We are fewer now, the cyclic slaughter has taken it's toll on our gene pool. Tomorrow only 12 will fall to Elarwyna. The sun is rising and I must get ready. I said my good-byes last night and there will be no breakfast gathering for me this morning. No fighter goes into that arena to face Elarwyna on a full belly. I perform the ceremonial ritual of bathing and braiding the orange-red hair I inherited from my clan. Dressing in the hand-sewn bodice, breechclout and moccasins, I am ready. Picking up my weapon, I head for the arena. I walk proudly and do not show my fear, my family must watch from the stands. Elarwyna trumpets that he is ready and we gladiators pass through the gates to meet him.......
