Description

Curiosity is the next NASA rover slated to explore mars. It will launch in November of this year and arrive at Mars in August of next year. Curiosity is about twice as long and more than five times as heavy as any previous Mars rover. A radioisotope (nuclear) power source will provide heat and electric power to the rover. Previous missions have used solar energy for power, which with it's meager power generation has greatly limited what these craft can accomplish.(sometimes driving only a couple of meters a day, then having to wait for a couple of days to recharge). Curiosity will land at Gale Crater, which is approx. 90 miles in diameter (the size of Connecticut and Rhode Island combined) and with a mountain that is three miles tall at it's center, taller than Mt. Rainier. Curiosity's 10 lbs. of plutonium will be enough fuel to last about one Martian year, which is the equivilant of nearly two Earth years.
