One general recomendation is to provide something to give a sense of scale. The viewer wants to understand the size of the ship. Windows work great for this purpose, but it's tricky to make tiny windows in Spore (for large ships).

I like the way that texture maped onto that cockpit part on the nose. I'm referring to the white with black lines radiating out.
