The "seeing where it's going" does play a part too, birds don't look straight down when flying, they look forward, so why would pterosaurs?

I'm sure they'd be able to look down briefly while flying, but maintaining that position makes no sense biomechanically

No, because it would totally screw up the streamlined shape of the body needed to keep the air flowing smoothly over the wings

I never heard that before, and I'm pretty sure that would make flight stability pretty difficult, so I'd say no

I never heard of that discovery and I can't find anything online about it (not that I doubt you) but in any case I always believed they were separate species anyways
