I remember those commercials. They were all over the wave when I was a boy. Fairby Enterprises newest line of Colony ships, the Prospects, had just started rolling off the production lines. The government quickly bought them all up, packed 'em full, and sent them to the corners of the Galaxy, hoping to establish a massive trade empire. Well, it worked. For decades, commerce boomed as colony after colony was established. Then the rebellions came. Colonies tired of being used to harvest resources for the Core worlds rose up and claimed their planets for themselves. And all those Prospects, those behemoths of steel and nuclear fusion plants? Yeah, they had a use for those. Mounting whatever weapons they could to them, they began raiding Core shipping.
Tomorrow's Future, today, huh? If this is tomorrow's future.... what's the day after that?
