[ Personal Voice Diary of Isath Lobroth, Day 085 - Entry 003 ]
I arrive at the scene of the crime?an abandoned construction site on the outskirts of Port Fornax?just as the sun sinks behind the final silhouettes of the city's skyline. As night falls, the oppressive glare of the city's luminescence finally yields to a soothing darkness. I pause, allowing my vision to acclimate to the shadows enveloping the construction site before venturing further in. The hum of police drones fills the silence as I reach the yellow tape barring the entrance to the site. I glance toward my handler, offering a silent plea that he might deign to raise the tape for me, but alas, my hopes are in vain. He just stands there, arms crossed smugly, hoping I'd make a fool of myself trying to slip under the tape without his help. I deny him of that.
"...We can stand here all night, Lobroth. It's not like I've got anything better to do. So, what'll it be? Are you gonna swallow that pride of yours and say 'please', or will you just stand here like a twig till morning?"
I smile at his futile attempt to get under my skin, and continue standing there, my gaze unwavering. Our little charade has become routine, and my victories have been as consistent as his losses. After a minute of this silent standoff, all the while under the scrutiny of the other officers on-site, he finally sighs and lifts the tape, allowing me to walk through without needing to limbo my way past. I give him a nod?barely, mind you; I'm not one to hand out gratitude like mints?and proceed towards the body, with the investigator already hovering over it like a carrion crow.
"...The victim is a female archin, an architect who worked at a nearby firm. Her husband filed the missing person report three days ago, following a final call from her office in which she promised to return home after working an additional hour. She never came. Her body was found two hours ago by the security guard patrolling the site, who called it in immediately. The drones have been analyzing the footage from all the functioning cameras in the area, which show the victim entering the site unaccompanied. She rode the construction lift to the unfinished building's highest level, walked to the edge, and hurled herself into eternity: a clear case of suicide. We've already..."
Assumptions. With age comes wisdom, but also a tendency to draw conclusions based entirely on prior experience, without bothering to observe the full picture. It's the kind of laziness that lawbreakers thrive on.
"...The hell did your pet lizard just say to me, Detective Hancock?"
"Don't take his comments personally, you'll only encourage him. And I'm sure Isath here has some thoughts he'd like to share with us about this case. Right?"
I choose to ignore my handler's weak sarcasm, and instead ask the investigator one simple question: where was the victim during those three days she was unaccounted for? Is there any footage available of her movement during this period? The investigator blinks at me in surprise, and begins to stammer something about how it's not relevant to the case, and how I'm overcomplicating a simple suicide. If he's in this much of a hurry to go home, then by all means, go. I'm sure his superiors will be thrilled to hear that he let a murderer walk free because he couldn't be bothered to do his job properly.
That shut him up, and he begins frantically tapping on his tablet, requesting the drones to pull up the relevant footage. Unsurprisingly, however, said footage is all static. Even less surprisingly, the cameras that did happen to catch the victim's movement minutes before her demise just so happen to have been the only functional ones in the area.
A coincidence? To the dull-witted perhaps, but not to me. This was not a suicide. This was murder. And I believe that once we get our victim on a table, we'll find a familiar sight in her circulatory system...
We need to put a rush order on the autopsy.
